Impedance Converter Kit Permits a Single High Voltage Probe to be Used With Both an Oscilloscope and a DMM

Cal Test Electronics, a premier supplier of over 3,000 standard and custom electronic test accessories, today introduced the CT3197, a new Impedance Converter Kit designed to adapt Cal Test’s High Voltage Oscilloscope Probe (Model CT2982) for use with a standard digital multimeter (DMM). Priced at only $52.00, the CT3197 is the most economical way to eliminate the need to purchase a separate high voltage probe for DMM use.

Cal Test’s Model CT3197 Impedance Converter Kit has a DC-to-50MHz bandwidth and working power of 1W max. It has accuracy of ±0.25% and maximum input voltage is 250V DC or 200 Vrms AC. These specifications are perfectly matched to the CT2982 High Voltage Probe. The Model CT3197 Impedance Converter Kit consists of two components; a BNC feed-through terminator and a BNC-to-4mm banana plug adapter. Cal Test’s High Voltage Probe, Model CT2982, has a BNC male connector and is intended for use with oscilloscopes and the standard 1MW output impedance. Therefore, the probe is incompatible with the input impedance of 10MW and 4mm banana plug connectors found on most DMM’s. 

If only a BNC female-to-4mm banana plug adapter (one piece of the converter kit) is used, the impedance mis-match will cause reading inaccuracy. By utilizing both components of the Model CT3197 to connect the probe and DMM, the BNC feed-through terminator “matches” the impedance for proper readings and the adapter fits the 0.75-inch spacing of the meter’s banana plug input. The high voltage probe has a 1000:1 divider ratio and a 10kV rating. This means that 1,000 volts will read as 1 volt on the DMM.
