“Do It Yourself” 4mm Safety Banana Plugs Make Repairing and Building Test Leads & Patch Cords Fast, Easy, & Inexpensive

YORBA LINDA, Calif., August 29, 2003 . . . Cal Test Electronics, a premier supplier of over 3,000 standard and custom electronic test accessories, announced the addition of three low-priced solderless 4mm Safety Banana Plugs to its expanding product line.

Priced as low as $1.35, the plugs provide a fast, easy way for a “Do it Yourselfer” to repair test leads or build custom patch cords.T his is a must for anyone that uses DMMs or other equipment with safety jack connectors. Designed to provide protection for both the technician and test equipment, the plugs can be rated by the International Safety Standard IEC61010-031 to 1,000V CAT III P2 when properly assembled to safety test lead wire.

Each of the plugs consists of three parts; two snap-together housing pieces and one metal contact (4mm banana plug or jack). The three plugs are:

  • CT2631-# DIY 4mm Sheathed Banana Plug, Stacking

  • CT2989-# DIY 4mm Sheathed Banana Plug, In-line

  • CT3134-# DIY 4mm Sheathed Jack, In-line

Each plug is available in six (6) colors: -0 Black, -2 Red, -4 yellow, -5 Green, -6 Blue, and –9 White (when ordering, replace the -# with the color code number above). The unique internal design of the plugs allows for the gripping of the test lead wire’s insulation, which is a requirement of IEC61010-031. To insure user protection and a long useful life, each banana plug tip is insulated and its spring contact made of beryllium copper.

Cal Test Electronics’ new Do It Yourself plugs are quick and easy to use. Simply feed a test lead wire through one housing piece and strip, assemble the lead to the metal contact by tightening a small set screw (solderless connection), then snap the second plastic housing on to complete the assembly. A 1.5mm Allen wrench) is used to tighten the internal set screw (optionally available as Model CT2919).

When assembled in accordance to instructions and using rated test lead wire (Cal Test can also provide high quality Silicone and PVC jacketed test lead wire), the completed assembly can be rated as high as 36A of current, depending on the wire used.
